Website Design – The Crushing
Truth Why Certain Web Designs Hinder The Flow of Website
Traffic
Break This Website Design Rule and You’re
SUNK! If you
or your webmaster breaks this website design rule, you are on
your way to little or no traffic, so pay attention. A high
percentage of web designers miss the boat when it comes to
traffic getting website design. Get a load of this email I
received from a potential client...
You did a website for a
friend of mine’s and she just loved the results and your
pricing. I’ve been looking for a knockout website design.
One that is eye appealing and so beautiful that people go,
“ooh and aahh” when they see it. I want to make the most
popular websites blush with envy…
After she thoroughly explained what she
envisioned, I had to decline her business. The website she
was looking to have built was going to be a stunner; there
was no doubt about that! The problem was, it was going to
be a NO TRAFFIC GETTING stunner. She eventually found a
Webmaster who was willing to build the site exactly the
way she wanted it but that’s when the problems
started.
I Went To Your Website But...
He did the site in Flash, plus it had some other breathtaking
graphics, a peel away ad, a footer ad and one of those pop up
talking video spokespersons. This woman plopped some heavy cash
into radio, television, PPC and press release advertising. The
good news was; the traffic started coming in droves. The bad
news was, her website kept tanking out. Instead of viewing her
AWESOME website, visitors were getting the infamous,
“Network Timeout - The server at
www.awesomelookingwesbite.com is taking too long to
respond” error message.
Even after the Webmaster put her on a dedicated server, the
website loaded slowly. He ended up building two versions of her
website; a flash version and an HTML version without the
glorious graphics. Once he gave the people a choice, to her
chagrin, the majority chose the throttled down HTML version.
Who has two minutes or more to wait on a website to load? What,
are you trying to take us back to the days of dial up and 56k
modems?
He Who Learns This Website Design Secret, ROCKS and
RULES!
In your quest to get a website designed or build one yourself,
REMEMBER this rule: a website is not supposed to look stunning
unless it’s vying for the most awesome looking website of the
year award.
There’s only a certain segment of people and industries that
can break that rule: Hollywood, television shows, actresses,
actors, record companies, models, artists, musicians, DJs,
photographers and other niches were looks and are every thing
and a budget is not really an issue.
Website Design 101 in a Nutshell
Your website design should have a twofold mission. Number one:
Get massive website traffic! Number two: Convert that website
traffic at a higher than normal rate. If you follow that
philosophy, there are certain things you will stay away from
such as, “Flash, bandwidth eating graphics, scripts that bog
down servers and other goobly gooes that make search engines
go, “eewe!”
Don’t Disturb My Website Design Groove!
A website design that distracts visitors from the path they
should be taking, (i.e., clicking on ads, opting for the
opt-in, placing orders, getting referrals, downloading info,
etc.) is a poorly designed website... no matter how
BREATHTAKING it looks! The design of the website must lead
people to the desired destination in the least amount of time;
nothing more, nothing less.
Remember The Song, “I Know What Girls
Like!”
Actually I never heard the song, however that doesn’t prevent
me from using the title to make a dazzling point that will
generate you constant wads of cash in the years to come… if you
take heed. You have to know what website visitors like when it
comes to website design and here’s the list…
- Fast loading websites
- Websites that DON”T require them to download a file in
order to view the website
- Websites that don’t have pesky pop up and pop under
ads
- Websites that don’t have forced exit pages they are
reprimanded to when they click the RED X on the right hand
corner of their browser.
- Websites that don’t secretly load scripts, spyware,
adware or malware (P.S. Website owners who have to resort
to those types of tactics to make money online, should
really find a new business!)
- Webmasters who sell their opt-in lists to other
advertisers
- Websites that don’t automatically start playing videos
or music; unless it’s an artist’s site
- Websites with great content
- Websites that are easy to navigate
- Websites were the color scheme, graphic design and
overall layout isn’t overbearing or protruding
- Websites were the web designers are not bent on showing
off all their impressive programming and coding skills
If you or your Webmaster ignores, takes lightly or
disregards what visitors like, your website won’t be generating
much traffic and that's the crushing truth!
